In the fall of 2019, I was the lead editor on a special project that examined the fallout from historic flooding in the Missouri River Basin.
The series was a collaboration between multiple news outlets: Columbia Missourian, KOMU 8 News, and KBIA. The stories we produced won multiple Missouri Press Association Awards, including Best Coverage of Rural Life or Agriculture, Best Business Story and Best News or Feature Series. In summer 2020, I was one of two co-managing editors of the Missouri Information Corps, a pop-up newsroom created by the Missouri School of Journalism. We covered the impact of COVID-19 on the state and produced dozens of enterprise stories that were picked up by Missouri newspapers. Some of our best work included:
- Breaking the news that, nearly four months in the pandemic, Missouri wasn’t providing direct funding or guidance to support contract tracing by local health departments.
